Syrian enigma II
|
At
least this time, the US president listened to me.
He remembered the democratic virtues the USA were always preaching to
the world. Therefore, he will wait with his decision until the Congress
has discussed the matter on September 9th. This will leave some time
for the UN inquiry to come to conclusions, and even for potential
allies to consult their parliaments (again). He added: "... our country
emerges from a time of war, that I was elected in part to end." |
And the president ended his 10 min speech last Saturday in the White House rose garden with a remarkable statement: He said "right makes might" (an Abraham Lincoln quote),
"not the other way around". Was he really serious about that? Who will
tell right from wrong? The CIA? The US Congress? The parliaments of his
allies? The UN Security Council? Based on what facts? Based on what
laws? |
For
the interest of world peace, it is difficult to accept that any nation,
based on information gathered by its secret service, feels
empowered to "walk right in" and call to account any suspected villain,
most practically executing the verdict on the spot. Even back in the
Wild West, the bad guys first had to stand their trial before they got
hung up. |
I
am sure, also in Syria it is against the law to kill women and children
with poison gas. If anyone has convincing proof showing who did this,
he should confront the Syrian authorities with this information.
These authorities may then react either by arresting those responsible
for this crime, or by declaring that they unfortunately at present
are unable to get hold of them, due to the general unrest in the
country. |
Only
if the Syrian authorities should be unable to arrest the suspects, the
UN might rightfully step in and launch activities with the aim to
restore law and order, because one thing should be clear: No one in the
world, at any place, should get away with killing women and children.
And any state that is incapable of preventing this, needs urgently
international help. No cowboy marching in and shooting around. Help. |
